Bea Shapiro ditched her usual skin care regimen
Ahead, Shapiro shares her favorite products for Glamour‘s Get out of the routine.
My cleanser
I use Hourglass cleanser. This is a creamy cleanser. I really like my cleansers to be gentle. Let’s say I’ve put on a lot of makeup or something, I’ll use the micellar water first and then I’ll apply the cleanser. I really like the more milky cream formulas just because I feel like they aren’t as stripping. I also feel that any type of oil breaks down makeup better.
My peeling
I’m not really committed to this step. Sometimes I use Biologique Recherche P50. I think it’s great, but I don’t believe in exfoliating every day. If you are constantly exfoliating, I think your skin becomes very heavy and broken. So I’ll use it when I feel like I need it, or when I’m looking more congested, or I need to brighten up my face.
My serum
I actually just started using SkinBetter Science. There’s one called Alto Defense that dermatologist Dan Belkin gave me. He recommended it and I really like it. I feel really good and my tone looks a little better. I have a tendency to blush and haven’t had any since I started using it.
My moisturizer
I use my new one. It’s called Ellis Brooklyn Satisfying Skin Care and Moisturizer. This step is very easy. Sometimes when I’m too tired, I skip the toner and serum and just use this moisturizer. It has several steps built into one. It has clinical and strong active ingredients: niacinamide and catechins. But we also have a protective aspect, which is red algae. And I really like the texture. Not too heavy but also has that fluffiness to it and is very moisturizing at the same time. Plus, it has that nice, cozy vanilla scent. So that’s my mainstay right now. Sometimes I skip the eye cream and use it as an eye cream.
My eye cream
I used to wear very thick eye creams because I thought I was getting old and needed to address those lines. But one day I got a facial from Melanie Simon in Los Angeles. I used to have really bad bags under my eyes and she said it was because my eye cream was so thick it was clogging my eyes. I said, “What? I’ve never heard of that in my life.” She said: “You really should go for a very light eye cream. You don’t even have to apply it every day. You just have to put it on the crow’s feet.’ When she told me that, it was a game changer for me. I do the Prevage eye cream. I also recently tried Caudalie which I really liked; it’s creamy but on the lighter side. This is Premier Cru.
My face mask
I use a lot of face masks, probably one every week. There is one from Omorovicza, the Ultramoor Mud Mask. I have combination skin so I like to use this on my nose and t-zone which can get a bit congested. Some mud masks are very drying, but this one is really soothing. It’s amazing because it’s cleansing, but it has this filling aspect to it.
My spot treatment
I have the Avéne spot treatment from their acne line. Cleansing emulsion. This is a mattifying emulsion, although it should be a spot procedure.
My face is a fog
I haven’t used a face mist in a long time. Then I had some samples and my boyfriend, this 220-pound ex-hockey player, started using face mists. I said, “Hmm, why? That’s interesting.” This is the Royal Fern Facial Mist.
My sunscreen
I use EltaMD. An old classic.
My lip balm
I use two quite religiously. Rhode Peptide Lips and Summer Fridays Lip Balm. I think they are both very funny. Road, I taste watermelon. It’s so good.
My devices
I should use devices more. Sometimes I’m lazy. But if I’m really good, I have this book with LEDs. This is DPL II. It’s pretty strong in a good way. My skin looks brighter. I think it’s one of those things that you should use all the time, but I don’t know if I always do. But I can see the difference. But it’s hard, even hard to find time to do basic things.
